Comments for Pink Floyd, Ummagumma

When I first listened to this album I thought that PF was in wrong tracks. Now I prefer this as an fine tuned double album with lots of good things. I usually do not like David Gilmours commercial type style but NARROW WAY is really good. Roger Waters is as always great in this album. Who else whould compile from tapes a masterpiece like SMALL FURRY ANIMALS GATHERED IN THE ..... and so on. WOW!!!!

This album is the first PF album I heard, and I found two of my favourite PF works here. They are "A saucerful of secrets" and "Be Careful of that Axe, Eugene". These two live versions are much better than the studio versions. I will not love Pink Floyd that much without these two fantastic live performance. When listening to this album, try to turn off the light and lie on the bed, it can give you a wonderful feeling.

I think Ummagumma is the best PF album.Like someone said before turn you lights off and see what sound and music can do for you. Try for instance one of my favorite pieces:"Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" and then say I'm wrong. That's what music is all about; transportation trough sound.

The live-version of ´saucerful of of secrets´ is one of the best songs I´ve ever heard. It´s just the organ part at the end of the song and the ahhh ahhh cryings with its´ melodical ingenuity that makes the song unique. If you listen to the studio version all the magic of this psychadelic masterpiece is gone and you just turn back to ´ummagamma´.

Tough to get used to, but really enjoyable when done. Classic Floyd/remixes here.

When I bought the album I couldn´t believe that this album should be from Pink Floyd. I listend again and again. But I couldn´t believe it. I don´t like it. And so I gave it away.

This is probably the best "cut" of the "old" Floyd, the one that us old farts grew up with. The sound quality is not what you would expect. They recorded this using a 4 track tape and even on the CD version you can hear the hiss. BUT this is Floyd at the top of the tree. Also notice that back in the golden days the audiance did not make any sound WHEN THE BAND WAS PLAYING! The studio cut is interesting but play LOAD Granchester Meadows one of the all time best acoustic pieces by Roger. Also notice the fly, it appears in other cuts on other albums.

The live material is fantastic; the second disc less so. You can find the newly remastered version for about $20--well worth it if just for the screams on "Careful..."

Jukka: Syd Barrett's style of playing is very similar to that of Gilmour's. This is not surprising, since it is documented that Gilmour had taught Barrett a great deal on playing the guitar. Would you also dismiss Syd as being "commercial"? Like many white people, you don't have an appreciation for blues/black influences in music, so you use "commercialism" as an excuse to write it and Gilmour off. You steal the music artform that they invented(rock) claiming it as your own, while poopoo-ing on them(rythym and blues) at the same time. But what would you know? You're just a racist, aryan dumbass. I guess it's true what they say about Swedes being "reserve Germans" during WWII.

Well, I was simply blown away by this album. Wow, the live CD is simply mind boggling. To bad about the poor sound quality though. I particculary love 'set the controls ...'and 'a saucerful ...' The guitar-play in the latter is awsum. Of the second CD I especially love 'A narrow way prt II'. To bad they fade it away in the end. Great drumming in the instrumental bit there.

Hey,rlegins,I agree with you.Jukka collects Roger Waters' shit and he cannot appreciate any Floyd album whose credits do not read "R.Waters-Everything."Peace!

The studio side is too good for words. Rick Wright should have left the band after penning masterpiece Sysyphus. Dave rocks, Rog croons and Nick beats his cash register.

This album shows the true talent of Floyd, but that''s about it. Takes a whole lot of getting used to. I love it! The Small Furry Creatures..... song I still haven''t gotten used to! LOL!

Several friends and I were into the cutting edge of 60's music listening . We walked into the neighborhood music store and scouted through the vinyls. I stood for a while transfixed by an album cover. THE portrait, it's reflections(s)(s)(s)and the titles of the songs won me over in about 60 to 90 seconds. I have since worn out 4(four) double albums. Is there anybody out there who has a recording medium far in excess of the compact disc yet captures the original magic of the original session(s)? Many albums have been lost in the translation, not to mention the lost album art(12 psychedelic inches). My cousin and I were into recording with reel to reel and sometimes put three taperecorders side by side with one feed reel and one take-up reel while defeating the 'no tape, no play' feature. We came up with echo, accelerated echo and sound on sound. So when I listened to the album, I wore it out very quickly, wanting to preserve it but wanting to play it for people. Forget the sound effects! The bonding of the music, lyrics and timing along with The Richly Steeped Folklore and Tradition were...I dunno, all pervasive. (Damned fly, he gave his life for a spot on the daily news.) Wish there were some way of getting all the nuances and quirks of vinyl on nowadays recordings. Thanks, BatHank>>>>

The first time I saw PF was Nov 1970 at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh. It was a religious experience. There isn't enough space here to discribe the event. Explosions on stage were unknown in 1970. When the scream occurred during "Careful with that ax", there was mass panic in the audience. 90% of the people there had enlarged pupils, from the acid. I could go on for an hour, even this many years later, I will never forget that night. Bob (Pittsburgh, PA)
