Comments for Pink Floyd, The Final Cut

*** Roger has completely taken over the band. Waters' unofficial first solo album. PRIME CUTS-- "Hero's Return", "Gunners Dream", "Not Now John". --J.teel

Even though it is considered a solo effort; Gilmour's guitar is evident on tracks such as "The Final Cut" Now, that aside, the album is, in my opinion, one of the greatest lyrical pieces of work in music. More like poetry than anything else. Give it more than one play like all floyd music. You will find that you will understand where the music is coming from..... DON'T BE TURNED AWAY WHEN THE MUSIC STORES SELL IT FOR MEGA CHEAP.. IT'S WELL WORTH IT!!

FINAL CUT is the Roger Waters record that shows the brilliancy of him as an songwriter. When other songwriters are concidering anti-war stuff as non-modern, Waters seems to notice even now that more than entertainment, we need mutual understanding and certainly we should not accept the politicians and war-creeps doings.
E-MAIL: kyle.e.gilats@uwrf.edu
A must have for big Wall fans, and Roger Waters. The Final Cut and Hero's Return the guitar stands out wonderfully. Quite underated.

I hate to say it- but, what happened here guys??? Wanna be Wall album which just doesn't cut it. For Floyd, I hate to say that this is not too great. Of course, nothing beats Floyd, but not one I would choose to listen to on a stoney night
E-MAIL: herbert.zach@telecom.at
I donīt like it. It is a poor bad music.
E-MAIL: patr0044@tc.umn.edu
Hey, it's an overall well-themed anti-war album, but face it- save for "Not Now John", the music's pretty lackluster, kinda like (the song) "Wish You Were Here" with all the soul drained from it. I didn't buy a copy 'til I found one in a used record bin for two bucks...
E-MAIL: rlegin@ee.netcom.com
The name says it all ... 'THE FINAL CRAP'. Waters must've had a 'MOMENTARY LAPSE OF IDEAS', because the material on this album seems to have been copied from 'THE WALL'. If you're like me, make sure that you buy your CD's from Tower Records. This way you can always get a full refund in case you end up with self-plagiarized, commerical garbage like this one.
E-MAIL: lfischer@tao.sosc.osshe.edu
Please say it ain't so - Is this for real?!?? Roger Waters and this album are a big joke.
E-MAIL: lt571@freenet.uchsc.edu
When the remaining members of Pink Floyd were working on the "Momentary" project, Roger Waters was confident that it wasn't going to be completed. When it was released and started selling well, he was agitated and sued Dave Gilmour for the rights to use the "Pink Floyd" name - once again confident that he was going to prevail. Of course Waters lost once again. Such a BIG EGO AND a LOSER I HATE THIS KIND OF ATTITUDE.
E-MAIL: rwhipp@earthlink.net
The Wall is an overburdened concept album...Roger Waters was in an overly self-indulgent mood at the time. The Final Cut is the album in which Roger Waters is finally able to relate his experiences to us.

Some people say that Roger Waters is an egoist. I think he is the only member of Pink Floy who had something to say of social value. His stoner days were over with this one. I don't see how anyone could call him an egotistical person after listening to this one; it's not about him, it's about his father.
E-MAIL: Trane816
Don't mean to cause a stir, but for the reviewers with bad comments on this album- get your fucking facts straight! Youre bitching about how it isn't musically fulfilling when its not supposed to be. Waters always put more emphasis on lyrics and has admitted so in interviews. This album is words, The best and most affecting fucking words he ever wrote with the Floyd, which i guess is open for discussion. But please do not criticize what you cannot understand. This album is one man's search for himself, it's all in "The Final Cut". Understand something for what it is and not for what you want it to be is all I ask. Trane816 Rating:**** out of five
E-MAIL: Trane817
This album would've had real meaning of social values to me if Waters would only FOCUS on the issues that truly affect society...things like homelessness, gang violence, aids, and racism, rather than manipulating one or more of the above as a backdrop for the telling of his father's death... which is what he always seems to do. I am sure that RW is traumatized by his lost, but you guys are also forgetting that millions of others also perished during the second world war. For a person of his stature and his "supposedly" vow to work for world peace, it's only fitting that the theme of this album should've been about all thos who died war and not just one person. But, this doesn't come as a surprise to me, since we all know how notorious Waters is for his self-centeredness. Trane817 Rating: **** out of 10.

From the Gibraltar Encyclopaedia of Progressive Rock: The Final Cut - more of The Wall, only not as interesting. Wake me when it's over.
E-MAIL: reeves@compuserve.com
This is boring. The albums before "Animals" and after "The Final Cut" are way better.
E-MAIL: Nigel Stone

Nothing could be more dreadful than the redundant Roger Waters era. Animals-The Wall-TBC... 3 VIRTUALLY identical records in a row. Self-plagiarised and very boring.
E-MAIL: haan@engr.umbc.edu
Hey, nigel STONE! What's TBC? 'The Boring Cut'? 'The Final Cut' should be 'TFC'. What makes you boring when you listened to these albums? If 'boring' was the only reaction for those, I think you're not qualified for those stuffs. You can hate Roger Waters or you can curse him. But please do that in your own place. This is not a toilet that you tried to make this place to be. If you really want to say, 'I hate RW', please prepare some understandable reason not just 'boring'. We are dealing with one of the most intellegent groups in the rock history. And also we're talking about one of the most hard-to-get-the-point albums of PF. As one said before, if you want to say something about it, you must know something more than just an adjective, 'boring'.
E-MAIL: asldjasdas
Ok, here's a better use for an adjective....Haan@engr.umbc.edu is a very boring person. Hahahaha!!!!!
E-MAIL: Haan...
Why are you trying lecture others on the subject of grammars? Yours isn't exactly Oxford material, you know. Take, for instance, the sentence "We are dealing with one of the most intellEgent groups in the rock history." First of all, you mis-spelled "intellIgent". Second of all, that sentence structure doesn't sound right when you place the "the" before "rock history. "We are dealing with one of the most intelligent groups in rock history." would sound much better. Remember, english is not like French or German where a definite article is often required to precede a noun. Also, the tense structure on the sentence "What makes you boring when you listened to these albums?" is incorrect. Since you are making references to the past (i.e. "listened"), it should read something like this instead: "What made you bored when you listened to these albums?". Get the picture??!?!???
E-MAIL: P.S....
Note: Now, had I made an erroneous error as was deliberately done on the first sentence of the last post (i.e. "grammars" instead of "grammar") I would have at least posted a message pointing out such errors as I am doing right now.

Voted as the worst Pink Floyd album of all time on the PF internet poll site.
E-MAIL: This album sucks
For me, I found this album very racist and offensive. First off, where does Roger Waters get off referring to Japanese people as 'Nips' and Japan as a nation of youths committing suicide? Point of fact: Japan DOES NOT have the highest suicide rate among youths which is a stereotype often perceived by the terribly ignorant. Secondly, his toying around with such ideas as "genocide" in a vengeful manner in spite of being a self-professed peacenik won't go down very well on his resume. It's no wonder why many Holocaust survivors around the world called for the boycott of Columbia Records. Hey, Roger... Where do you get your ideas from, anyway? The Reggie White Institute of Bigotry?
E-MAIL: Roger Waters.
MY NAME IS ROGER WATERS. I SMELL OF RAW, UNTAMED SHIT. WHEN I WALK BY, GILMOUR DOESN'T HOLD HIS NOSE BECAUSE HE IS POLITE. p.s. I AM A FAG AND AM JEALOUS OF THE JAPANESE!!!!!!!
E-MAIL: J.Teel
Roger,do you think they'll try to break my balls?I said SO many dumb things.
E-MAIL: metalove6@aol.com
As for words, this is their best album (if you ask me). It holds great meaning. I don''t particularly care for Waters myself to tell you the truth. BUT the man can write some lyrics!!!! Everytime I listen to it I feel like I''m actually in the war or watching it happen. I give it an 8.9

Hey, I'm all for the 'innovative' pink floyd that syd barret lead, and for the 'stoner' pink floyd that dominated the 70's, but THIS ALBUM AND THE WALL ARE MASTERPIECES and the 'personal' pink floyd will always be the most powerful for anyone who steps back and actually gives a listen to what is being said... instead just sitting and 'vibing out' to the spacey sounds. This is an album that makes people feel something real and that's rare for any band. A Roger Waters solo album? Probably, but it's a fucking amazing display of Roger's thoughtful writing, and hey the music isn't all that 'simple' either. It's a bit more understated than other records but who cares? What is 'Breathe' but a couple of chords and spacey guitars and harmonies? It's not gonna make people feel anything but spaced out. Don't be fooled. This was always the most powerful pink floyd record for anyone who actually let themselves appreciate it. Can anyone hear the power in Roger's singing? Sure he's not the smooth David Gilmour or the Madcap, but you can hear the integrity pouring out of the speakers when you hear Roger's straining voice... Have another listen. It's amazing.

To those who don't like the album: - ok, - you're entitled to an opinion. To the guy who takes offence about the 'nips': - this is a general term used to describe the Japanese race, there was a lot of ill feeling after the war towards the Japanese and around the late 1970's/early 1980's due to the ship yards loosing business to the Japanese - I doubt Roger Waters is having a personal dig at the Japs, it's just a saying, - it's not a bullet or a concentration camp - nor the Berma railway - I often wonder what Englishmen are referred to as abroad? I certainly don't mind the Americans calling me a 'limey' etc! I quite like this album by the way, - I reckon Waters has done a good job of taking the listener's mood and understanding to the times, and gives younger people insight into how Roger's age group saw this country (UK) around the early 1980's. Things were in a shite state and the Falklands didn't help matters (though we have a great deal of respect for those who lost their lives and those lucky to return home). Maggie (Mrs Thatcher) was in charge at the time, and quite a few people were miffed with her - though she won another term if I remember correctly. Roger's age group would have been having the same nightmares of loosing their fathers in World War II - around the time of the Falklands, - he draws on this, as well as his own bleak outlook (standing in the pub with brown and mild eyes) - it wasn't a happy time for him or the rest of the band - The IRA (maniacs who blow holes in bandsmen by remote control) - he does have regrets about his own behaviour within the band and tries to drown his sorrows though things just continue as the pressure releases from all those years of working together and keeping things going - is it any wonder the album is rather down-beat, - I reckon Roger has done a great job of painting a picture of his own landscape with The Final Cut - Well done mate! Take no notice of the guy who takes offence - he just craves attention but doesn't work hard enough to earn it.

So Waters has completely taken over the band has he? Do the songs contradict statistics and reek of bigotry? Is the album about himself, his dad, or anything else that didn't make the previous final cuts? I love this album. It's smart and emotional and very powerful; the strain in Waters' voice come near to a tear; and the music finely counterpoints the lyrics. sure it ain't the piper at the gates of dawn, nor is it Sorrow or cluster One, but there's something worthwhile here which deserves to be appreciated. Then again, taking a walk in the park would not only be cheaper and better for your health, it would honor the principals upon which the Final Cut rests. A great album, but then again, I'm the world's biggest Kid A fan, so...
