Comments for Procol harum, A Salty Dog

their best. with the exception of "too much between us" (which seems to float by in an unobtrusive way) every song on this album is instantly memorable. gary brooker''s voice is stronger and emotional ("a salty dog", "juicy john pink", "all this and more"), and matthew fisher''s pleasant voice also comes to the front ("boredom", "wreck of the hesperus", and "pilgrims progress"). highlights: "the milk of human kindness" (b.j. wilson''s incredible drumming give the song a strong sense of urgency), "the devil came from kansas", and "crucifiction land" (robin trower sings on this one).
The classic masterpiece from a great band that seems to be pretty much forgotten. Rock songwriting never got more original than this. To my knowledge, the only exposure this album got was when the group performed the title track on The Smothers Brothers Show. Beautiful guitar playing by Robin Trower stands out; all the musicianship is perfect. Probably almost impossible to find, but worth the look. Few bothered to check out Procol Harum after "Whiter Shade" but those who did weren`t disappointed. A gem.
