Brian Protheroe did some of the most intelligent, witty, and sometimes disturbing music of the last thirty years. As an intelligent artist, he was enormously underappreciated, and I think he has since become an actor. I have three of his lp recordings on vinyl and I wish to god someone bright would put them on cd so they won't be lost.

Protheroe is pretty amazing. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's aware of any available import CDs.

As far as I have been searching for any Brian Protheroe material on CD, I haven't been able to find anything. I still have to listen to the old LP's, full of scratches and other strange noises that don't belong there, but still it is worth listening to them. So please, release the albums on CD.

I found a good used LP of "Pick Up" by Brian Protheroe last year at some record show. Would love to get a hold of other stuff by him.

Brian Protheroe is a brilliant pop artist. Though I purchased his 3 albums in the '70's, I only recently rediscovered them in my LP collection and transferred them to tape so I could listen to them in my car and share them anew with my children, ages 14 and 10. Protheroe is a wonderful melodist, perhaps an extinct species in today's musical scene. His lyrics are imaginative, occasionally clever and witty. His arrangements sparkle. Would that there would be another album available out there or that he would get another chance to record in his presumed middle age. It would be interesting to find out what he was up to 20 years later.

All albums by Brian Protheroe are now being re-released on the Holland-based BASTA label. Brian Protheroe will travel to Holland in early October to publicize the event. The three albums were digitally remastered at EMI Abbey Road Studios. The three albums will be also be packaged in a 4(!) CD box which includes a new album of unreleased material. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had success locating Brian Protheroe LPs. Hints on locations on the northeast US in general and the Philadelphia/New York corridor in particular would be particularly appreciated. His work deserves a new audience.

Well, I just ordered the 4-CD set "Trilogie" from "CD Teleshop", so this should allow me to replace the increasingly-cowboy-hat-shaped LP copies I have of Pinball, Pickup and I/You. Also, while looking around, I found that they claim to be able to get Ry Cooder's "Blue City" soundtrack, and the Tubes "What Do You Want From Life?". We'll see how it goes. I also found the three individual CDs listed at CD Europe. I just hate doing business with them. --Richard

Brian Protheroe supposedly had a fourth album with Chrysalis called "Leave Him to Heaven", or something like that. Anyone know anything about this?

Dear pjd2@earthlink.ne, Having recently lived in the Philadelphia area, I can tell you that none of the places you might expect to have these albums have even heard of Brian P (Plastic Fantastic, 3rd St. Jazz), although I understand there is a large used record store in Princeton, NJ you might want to try. If you want a taped copy, I can send you one (freebie!). Back in the late 70''s I had written to Chrysalis Records to ask info about Brian P, and why no more albums. They didn''t respond to the question, but they sent me 3 free albums, and a bunch of promo stuff in which they were trying to pass off Brian Protheroe as another David Bowie (sans glam). You might try writing to them , although after I got the free albums all my friends wrote and they soon either got tapped out, or they got sick of responding. I ran into the Chieftains road manager on a plane from North Carolina to Philly bak in 1983, and he told me that Brian P was working with horn bands in England at that time. Go figure!
Creative and humorous. Ideas predate Fripp`s Exposure. Experimental yet pleasant. His first 3 discs (this is the third) show off his writing and stylistic variety. Strong recommendation.
