Butler's raspy voice has been oft-imitated but never championed. This was there first and best album by far.

What can be said about this album that hasn''t been said before? A lot of the new wavers really don''t dig this album because of the "rough" edges but, damn it, while their 3rd, 4th and 5th LPs may have helped to define that ''80''s new wave sound, I''d say albums like this and the first two by Joy Division helped to define the term "post-punk." Does any song really compare to "Fall"? On the Furs "comeback" tour in the late ''80''s I saw them do "India" live and man, you shoulda seen these trendy boys in the front break out into a mosh pit!
Post-punk attitude, Butler`s voice, biting lyrics sound remarkably up-to-date 15 years later.

This group are still so underatted, no thanks to the awful 1986 hit version of 'Pretty In Pink', and some rather embarrassing TV performances around that time. On this album and the follow up 'Talk Talk Talk', The Furs seemed the epitome of cool with their dark clothing and shades, professing a love for The Velvets and the New York punk scene. The tracks 'India', 'Blacks/Radio', and the slow, seething 'Sister Europe', are outstanding, and it is difficult to thnk of many other bands from this period who sound so energised. Special mention must go to Richard Butler's smoky vocals, which sound like a cross between Bowie and John Lydon at his most venomous, and the band playing is great throughout. Shame about what happened later, writer's block and various band members leaving halted their progress, but perhaps a best of collection would redress the balance of credibility for one of the great lost bands of the 80s.

Does anybody understand all the lyrics of Blacks/Radio?

this record deserves serious re-evaluation from a literary standpoint alone...some very fertile poetry indeed. maybe an in-depth interview with mr. butler could shed some light on the ideas behind "imitation of christ" or "flowers". i've read these since i was in my teens & damned if i can figure any of it out. are godard or brecht in there somewhere?!
INDIA/FALL/IM IN LOVE WITH these three make it worth having alone i remember seeing them live on montreal on their MIRROR MOVES tout and INDIA is the perfomance that i will carry to my grave i just bought their 1991 live cd and the new song on it rocks (not like in their rougher more lunatic days) they are a LIVE band and band that rock out on stage are the only bands that matter to me you knoww...
