This album is available on CD at the end of the "Dead Letter Office" CD.

*** (5 star scale)-- the band's first recording was a little 5 song e.p. that demonstrated some nifty songwriting. My high school physics teacher told me that he saw REM play the Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS right after this ep was released. I just thought that was pretty cool.--j.teel

this is akiller album. REM is at it's tightest, and Gardening At Night is one of the best songs in the entire REM collection. I have a bootleg of REM playing at a club in Athens, Georgia in 1981. Pre-Chronic Town . It's pretty rough but its good to have something that show's them them before they even had a major release. There are some great songs on there, and some that nevermade it. if you find it get it

Although "Carnival of Sorts" is the only song I know from this album,I think that it is one of their best.

Shows the band's early thought process might have been "jangle, first, think later." Seems like this formula was reversed for Murmur and subsequent albums, but this EP is still enjoyable.

2/11/99- This is probably the only R.E.M. I will ever purchase. I've heard alot of their stuff (my mom owns two albums) but this is the only stuff that sticks to my eardrum. Maybe it's Bill Berry's infectious drumming, he skillfully rocks that kit with the quick hi-hat beats. Buck and Mills have always been a tight melodic duo as well. A killer beginning for a band, rates up there with Paranoid Time from The Minutemen.
