Comments for Batish, Ashwin, In Concert

Ashwin Batish-Sitar / Zakir Hussain-Tabla: This is a live recording of a concert held at the performing Arts Theatre, University of California, Santa Cruz. It is a unique and refreshing experience in the exposition of the North Indian school of music. This recording begins from the second movement as Ashwin finishes his allap and enters into a composition set to a rhythmic cycle of 16 beats called Tintal. Zakir enters with a flourish of rhythmically accentuated phrases on tabla joining with Ashwin on SUM (the first beat of the rhythm cycle). Accompanying on tanpura are Francis Finnigan, Gary Harmon, and John Taylor. Recorded by KUSP-FM Santa Cruz.
