Comments for Squeeze, Frank

E-MAIL: djd1css@bolton.ac.uk
After the glossy production of their previous two albums, Squeeze return to the pub-rock sound of their roots. The songs aren't buried under production and consequently the strengths of the individual musicians are allowed to shine through. This was the last album to feature the contributions of Jools Holland on keyboards, who parted amicably with the band after the Frank tour. He will be remembered on this album for the sparkling solos he provides for Penton Place and Is It Too Late. However the two standout tracks are She Doesn't Have To Shave and Can Of Worms. Here Difford's lyrics reach new levels of excellence, while Glenn Tilbrook's gorgeous melodies continue to be the perfect foil.

FRANK should be remembered as Squeeze''s masterwork. It probably wont be. Sonically it is surpassed only by SOME FANTASTIC PLACE, and Squueze has never assembled such a fine collection of tunes. Even the throw-aways like (This Could Be) The Last Time sparkle. -----Rich Horton
Good album. "She Doesn`t Have To Shave" and "Melody Motel"are two of Squeeze`s best. "Dr. Jazz" is endearing. Afew of the songs aren`t so hot, but the album as a wholeis a winning effort. The album shows the first signs ofSqueeze`s return to "better days."
