Comments for Squeeze, Play

Play is such an under rated Squeeze album. It was distinctive in that the album had a structure to it most Squeeze albums lack - it was not merely a collection of unrelated singles. As a result the collection of tracks is consistent although I agree Cupid's Toy detracts Gone To the Dogs has an elaborate chord stucture and is well arranged. It fused Tilbrooks intricate chord structures and Diffords quirky lyrics with good production. It's well worth listening to.

Although I haven't heard their new album "Ridiculous"yet, this album is my favorite so far. I also thought that House of Love was the best song off the album--I can't believe it was only released as a B-side. I did like Gone to the Dogs, but it took a few listenings until I really liked it. Chris' voice was much missed, but Glenn's talented singing was a joy to listen to. I can never fathom why this band never makes a commercially successful album, but as long as they keep making music, I don't care!

Squeeze's first and last album for Warners, the lack of potential singles meant the band were dropped after it was released. However don't let this mislead you, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook wrote some of the band's most accomplished material yet. With Gilson Lavis, Keith Wilkinson and a large number of extra musicians (including Steve Nieve) Squeeze attempt and master a wide range of musical styles to provide the band's most ecletic album. Cupid's Toy and Letting Go are the two stand out tracks on an album that provides many magical moments.

Love this album. I think "Satisfied" is among their best ever. Also thought that "Wicked and Cruel" was a nice blend of melody and lyrics. "Gone to the Dogs" is the darkhorse of the effort--with a great blues beat at its core.
Songs range from brilliant to terrible. "House Of Love"is magnificent, and there are good songs scattered allover this album. Lots of acoustic stuff - it`s Squeezeturning over a new leaf. "Cupid`s Toy" and "Gone To TheDogs" detract from the album`s overall appeal.
