Comments for Sweet, Matthew, Altered Beast

His best album yet, and that's saying a ton!

Altered Beast is anexcellent followup to the smash hit "Girlfriend." Sweet's songwriting continues to develop as he explores love, pain, and his struggle to find some sort of god. Highlights are Devil with the Green Eyes about Sweets desperation for a girl to realize love, reaching out on desperation in general, and Ugly Truth Rock, a hard hitting song which begins with an excerpt from the dreadful cult film Caligula where the main character, a murderous Roman General declares himself a God. The song has Sweet declaring it's all bullshit. Sweet's nihilism is countered with a good dosage of hope and faith. Pessimism and optimism strugglin'. Not mad when combined with cool music and Richard Lloyd's incredible gutiars.

Good Album. Kind of hard rock/grungy in places, good melodic tunes in others. Very REM sounding occasionally (I think anyway). Lots of wild guitar - like it, like it a lot.

Without a doubt, this is Matthew Sweet's best album. Listen to it several times...you'll hear something new every time!

Absolutely the artist''s best ever, with his most poignant lyrics, his most interesting production, maximum stomp, maximum anger, and maximum riffage from his guitar collaborators R. Quine and R. Lloyd. This album WASN''T universally liked by even his fans, that''s how you know it''s the genuine Matthew Sweet article. This is where, like Neil Young on "Tonight''s the Night", Matthew "headed for the ditch". And that''s EXACTLY why it''s so great.
Pretty Good.

Best ever (not only for Matthew Sweet, but all albums). Tons of great, moody songs, with the incredible guitar work of Lloyd and Quine. This may not be the best album to start with, though, as it takes a couple of listens to get into.
