Comments for Beatles, The, Rubber Soul

Great album. Second only to Abbey Road in my book.
E-MAIL: aflynn@datx.com
This and "Who's Next" are the top classics of the '70s.
E-MAIL: jlowe@central.georcoll.on.ca
The last, and most mature, of the group's "pop" albums, "Rubber Soul" is a perfect bridge between early Merseybeat (Help!, Please Please Me, etc.) and psycadelic opuses (Sgt. Pepper). The album's crowning achievement is "Norweigan Wood", arguably John Lennon's best pre-acid tune.
E-MAIL: r2577@ix.netcom.com
The Beatles take a turn towards maturity, and glimpses of their future are evident on this album. Musically superb !
E-MAIL: scottros@acs.bu.edu
Incredible album, this is their best album or close to it. Perfect pop music. Whoever above me said that this and Who's Next were 70's classics was right except for the fact this album was released in 1966.
E-MAIL: springfield.grumman.com
Their first truly great album, I think. I'd leave off track 7 & track 14, then this would be perfect. The songs are exquisite and they follow on each others heels; there are more good tunes on here than on any other album I can think of. The sound is catchy but less cloying; they were becoming a "rock" act, and some of this shows a tendancy towards American soul (hence the title). In short - a great album fuill of tracks not on other compilation albums.
E-MAIL: porto@encomix.es
Me encanta este album, para mi es de lo mejor de la primera epoca de los Beatles y básico para los amantes de su música.
E-MAIL: btengwall@willmar.com
This album, "Michelle" in particular, is the reason i started to listen to the beatles. It is still my sentimental favourite, adn i'm eternally grateful
E-MAIL: Magic@AGT.com
DAZZLING! My all time favorite song is on this album; "Drive my Car" Most of my friends have also taken up listening to The Beatles because of my love for the song. The sing it all day long. The fab four have out done themselves this time! Thank-you Boys!
E-MAIL: brett@powerup.com.au
I love this album. I have it on CD. The song Michelle is one of my favourites, probably because my name is Michelle. The rest of the album is just as good.
E-MAIL: hologram@shore.intercom.net
This CD rox!! espically In My Life!!!!!!!!
E-MAIL: 11fox@111
I agree with that other guy. In My Life is my current all time Beatle fave. Peace!
E-MAIL: 911
THE BEST BEATLES ALBUM IN THE WHOLE *@!?**@ WORLD!!!!!
E-MAIL: b62btr@morgan.ucs.mun.ca
a great album. every song is a keeper, one of the first albums which shows the beatles really using their talent, and beginning to put thought into their songwriting.
E-MAIL: Jake00
This is a great album, featuring some of John Lennon,s best songs like Norwegian wood and In my life. It also has a great hit by George Harrison Think For Yourself. This is definetly their one of their finest albums!
E-MAIL: 11fox@111
YO! i'm 11fox@11,and i'm NOT a "that other guy"; I'm a girl! I agree, Peace is Cool.
E-MAIL: jcmart@maila.wm.edu
Rubber Soul is indeed a great album, but I highly recommend that you search out a copy of the american release LP. It has "I've Just Seen A Face" and "It's Only Love". Left off of the american LP, in what is probably the only good butchering of a beatles album Capitol Records ever did, are"Drive My Car", "If I Needed Someone", "What Goes On", and "Nowhere Man". The album has more aethetic unity than the proper British release(which is what everyone gets on CD now). It was a popular album, and copies are easy to find.
E-MAIL: trilling@usit.net
I wouldn't be so quick to assume that "Norwegian Wood ( This Bird has Flown )" is a pre LSD25 Lennon tune. Personally I could not choose a favorite between the cynical " I'm Looking Through You" and the imaginative "Norwegian Wood". This is definately my favorite album though.
E-MAIL: postmaster@mngape.gov.ar
este es uno de los mejores discos de toda la historia de la musica, y "En mi vida"es el mejor tema que mis cuatro amores crearon. Aguante ARGENTINA carajo !!!!
E-MAIL: Walrus
This one is behind "Abbey Road", but still's one of The Beatles' best . Great songs makes this album a classic. My favorite song is "Think for yourself" followed by "in my life".
E-MAIL: beatles@collector.org
Rubber Soul...........ummmmmmm ummmmmmmmmm!!!! Just pop it in the CD player ... hit the repeat button ... and you're on yer way! Does this album just get better, or what? Roger
E-MAIL: dmn@holycow.edu
Ah, the days of experimenting begin. Although some traces of the early love fixation still remain, this album is one of their finest. For anyone reading, did you know that this one inspired Brian Wilson to create the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", which in turn got Paul to come up with "Seargent Pepper's"? You could almost say that this one is the first true theme album.
E-MAIL: mottea%so@mhs.elan.af.mil
Wow!! What an album by four gorgeous geniuses.George Harrison's songwriting is taking off with Think For Yourself and If I Needed Someone, Paul writes the french-flavored Michelle and John gets nostalgic with one of my favorites, In My Life and we even hear from Ringo in What Goes On which he got a composer credit for (his first)
E-MAIL: This album is cool
This and Sgt. Pepper are the best albums by the Fab Four(although every album they ever made was great.)Drive My Car and I'm Looking Through You rule!
E-MAIL: 4404 SHADOW GLEN
I THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT ALBUM AND I TRULY LOVE THE BEATLES MY FAVOITE ARE PAUL, LENNON ,AND RINGO
E-MAIL: ldolton@voyager.net
I don't own this album yet. I will. Norwegian Wood is the best Beatles song ever except for Here Comes The Sun.
E-MAIL: pochock@ibm.net
"If I needed someone" is my favorite Beatle song. It was said that it was a Byrds influenced song. But the Beatles give it their own unique sound. The harmonies during the middle and end chime as brillant as the 12 sting guitar which is featured in the song. Sadly, the lyrics reflect the state of my life. I hope I find the girl of my dreams someday, only to have a certain exgirlfriend crawling back to me. Listen to the words, and you'll understand what I'm saying .
E-MAIL: 980
In My Life rocks the house.
E-MAIL: noel7 @sanamerica
A most progressive album if I ever heard one. Forget about "Revolver" and "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" being the site of The Beatles experimentation movement toward the revolution of listening to music to this day. "Rubber Soul" is the brainchild of the Greatest Rebellion in modern music history. All tracks are outstanding especially the last track in which The Beatles reveled on how you dont fool around with someones girl.

The Beatles are the best band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or as the good reverend would say.. "The Beatles kick butt!!!!!!!!!!!! To all the fools who dare speak out against them shall burn in hell and shall suffer everlasting damnation upon their souls!" until then, LONG LIVE THE BEATLES AND THEIR FANS!!!!
E-MAIL: fan 2
AMEN!!!!!!
E-MAIL: st96vt9a@post.drexel.edu
Rubber Soul marks, in my opinion, the beginning of what I refer to as the Beatles'middle period (Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt Pepper).Early in their career they were a tight band with fresh attitudes, but whose music was quite simple and underdeveloped. Late in their career, they were turning out incredible music, but were falling apart as a band. It was in this middle period that The Beatles were a tight band that really began to show their innovative side. Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles album. Paul's "I'm Looking Through You" is one of my favorite songs, period. This album is a must buy for someone looking to start a Beatles collection.
E-MAIL: cst19604@burridge.nscc.ns.ca
Definately the best beatles album. I can listen to it fo rhours and hours.... possibly even dfays at a time. It just rules!
E-MAIL: thivier@vision.eri.harvard.edu
In all of rock and roll, there's nothing else like "Norwegian Wood."
E-MAIL: @dr. robert
I really dig this album man. I mean, it is just so totally cool. Most of the tacks are really groovy, bordering on being almost heavy. Fortunately this hep cat was on these tracks long ago. For the true brilliance of the beatles, listen to Ringo play hammond organ on I'm looking thru you. Talk about tickling the ivorys, that cat Ringo was out of sight on that track. Have a nice day, i have to return to the sixties.
E-MAIL: hihat@linknet.net
What an album!! Does anyone else think that George's two songs on this album are great? Every Harrison song on every Beatles album is great, but always seem buried. Should have bagged the Ringo songs and given George more!
E-MAIL: I love the beatles

Im sick of this loser that travels from BEATLES page to page saying how bad they are. Why the hell are you hear then. do you have nothing better to do then try to make fun of somthing you dont have control over. just colm down, sit back, and do what you have been doing for the past 20 years,(give or take a life time)keep on losing
E-MAIL: eaur6@central.sussex.ac.uk
This is one of the finest albums ever recorded, and In My Life is probably the best song ever written. Hamper and Morgue can go to hell.
E-MAIL: bdavy1049@aol.com
The BEST Beatles album. Period. Listen to "In My Life," "The Word," and "Run For Your Life."
Fab Fours..

Fab4fan, Go to Hell. The Beatles suck. Look for me on other pages
E-MAIL: fan3
I agree.
E-MAIL: john.com
This was the 1st time the Beatles recorded songs in terms of a complete album than individual songs. I always thought this was a mediocre record when I grew up with the old U.S. version (it had It's Only Love and I've Just Seen A Face and didn't have tracks 1, 4, 8 and 13). The UK/CD release is much better. The albums strong points are "Norwegian Wood,""Nowhere Man,""The Word,""Girl,""In My Life" and "If I Needed Someone." However, it contains one of the world's worst songs ever, "Michelle."
E-MAIL: Heather
[sigh]...what's wrong with "michelle"?
E-MAIL: john.com
It's just to corny - to loungy, tennis courts, perrier etc. It sounds like something Wayne Newton should be singing. It sticks out like a sore thumb within the musical directions they were heading in.
E-MAIL: Heather
so did "yesterday"
E-MAIL: john.com
No. "Yesterday" is much more reflective. I think that's a nice song.
E-MAIL: Heather
i was saying that it too stuck out, and no one has come up with any perrier associations because of it.
E-MAIL: john.com
I don't think it stuck out. There were alot of mellow songs on the Help record. The perrier comment about "Michelle" had to do with the song being so Wayne Newtonish Las Vegas lounge corny. "Yesterday" is none of that.
E-MAIL: john.com
So Heather (or anybody else), what are your 10 favorite Beatles songs?
E-MAIL: Heather
i don't know. i'll just name off some random songs, but rest assured i'm leaving some out. "it won't be long" "please please me" "cant buy me love" "all my loving" "day tripper" "yesterday" "let it be" "hey bulldog" "revolution" "across the universe" "in my life" "ticket to ride" "that means a lot" "revolver" "lucy in the sky" "day in the life" "hey jude" "helter skelter" "i am the walrus" "oh darling"...i'm tired of typing all this out. there are many more.
E-MAIL: Heather
Paulie himself said it didn't fit!
E-MAIL: john.com
I never heard the song "Revolver."
E-MAIL: The john.com top 12 (not necessarily in order)
"I Want To Tell You" "I've Got A Feeling" "Dear Prudence" "Across The Universe" "It's All Too Much" "Strawberry Fields" "Don't Let Me Down" "Revolution 9" "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" "Here Comes The Sun" "She Said She Said" "What's The New Mary Jane" ........closely followed by "Rain" "Penny Lane" "Lady Madonna" "You Know My Name(Look Up The Number" "Revolution" "Only A Northern Song" "I Should Have Known Better" "I'm A Loser" "Nowhere Man" and "Fool On The Hill."
E-MAIL: john.com
How could I forget, "Dig A Pony"
E-MAIL: Heather
i was referring to the entire album. anyhow, i thought of some more. "maxwell's silver hammer" "paperback writer" "she loves you" "strawberry fields forever" "please mr. postman" "rock n roll music" "she came in through the bathroom window" "she came in through the washroom window" "the end" "rain" "free as a bird"....i'm tired of this again.
E-MAIL: Heather
oh, and how about "clarabella" "some other guy" "keep your hands off my baby" "soldier of love". that'll do for now.
E-MAIL: john.com
Ok, what Beatles songs (or covers) do you dislike? My list in no particular order: "Love Me Do" "A Taste Of Honey" "Till There Was You" "Hold Me Tight" "Thank You Girl" "I'll Get You" "She's A Woman" " Mr. Moonlight" "Eight Days A Week" "The Night Before" "Another Girl" "It's Only Love" "Michelle" "Your Mother Should Know" "Ob La Di Ob La Da" "Wild Honey Pie" "Martha My Dear" "Rocky Racoon" "Birthday" "Honey Pie" and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"
E-MAIL: Heather
90% of those were Paul songs. well, i don't like "a taste of honey" "i wanna be your man" "words of love" "dizzie miss lizzie" "everybody's trying to be my baby" "if i needed someone" "your mother should know" "revolution 9" "only a northern song", there are others as well. i'm sick of naming songs.
E-MAIL: Heather
why don't you like Maxwells Silver Hammer?
E-MAIL: john.com
Your mama should rename you "Predictable." I knew those last 2 were coming. I think "If I Needed Someone" is great too. I'm surprised you agree with some of them.
E-MAIL: john.com
I just don't like Paul's story songs. It's also the son of "Ob Da Duh." Paul forced them to record "Maxwell" 900,000 times thinking it would be a hit song. It's the weakest track on "Abbey Road."
E-MAIL: Heather
i don't like "if i needed someone". you are only trying to confuse me. "maxwell's silver hammer" is not weak, not weak at all.
E-MAIL: john.com
Didn't mean to confuse you - just bad wording. I like "If I Needed Someone." "Maxwell" is weak compared to every other song on that album.
E-MAIL: John Lennon, Sept. 1980
"I hate it because all I remember is the track. He made us do it a hundred million times. He did everything he could to make it a hit single and it never was and it never could have been."
E-MAIL: George Harrison, Feb. 1977
"Sometimes Paul would make us do these really fruity songs. I mean, my God, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" was so fruity. After a while, We did a good job on it, but when Paul got an idea or arrangement in his head....."
E-MAIL: Heather
ah, i don't care. i still like the song, if that's okay. besides, what's wrong with "fruity"?: )
E-MAIL: john.com
I prefer grapefruits myself.
E-MAIL: Heather
cherries, brother. cherries.
E-MAIL: john.com
cherries are good too.
E-MAIL: Heather
yes, the cherries are good. i also like grapes, but not quite as much as cherries.
E-MAIL: john.com
I like white grapes better than purple grapes. Why are they called white grapes? They look green.
E-MAIL: Heather
white wine, john.com.
E-MAIL: john.com
White wine looks sort of olive green too.
E-MAIL: Heather
mmm, not really. it's kind of clear to me. red wine looks kind of red to me, though.
E-MAIL: john.com
clear, but a little greener than water.
E-MAIL: Heather
i can't get no satisfaction.
E-MAIL: john.com
You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes - you just might find - you get what you need.
E-MAIL: Heather
that's nice. did you think of that yourself?
E-MAIL: john.com
No. I heard it in a song somewhere.
E-MAIL: Heather
i knew it. what song?
E-MAIL: john.com
"You Can't Always Get What You Want." my favorite Rolling Stones song - England's #2 band. I guess you don't know much of their stuff aside from "Satisfaction."
E-MAIL: Heather
no, i don't know them very well at all. i've always thought they were the ugliest band ever...but that's not why i don't know them very well.
E-MAIL: john.com
They were the anti-Beatles (a friendly battle): Beatles - clean cut/Stones - dirty & ugly. Beatles - nice pop rhythms/Stones - blues. Beatles - nice love songs/Stones - sexist, anti women (though many women don't seem to mind). The Stones also copied alot of Beatles trends, but they were great on their own.
E-MAIL: Heather
lots of girls love ANYTHING that sings up on a stage. mick jagger is proof of that.
E-MAIL: john.com
I knew a girl way back in highschool who was a big time feminist - went to womens rights rallies, made speeches & everything. Despite that, I once asked her what she thought about "Under My Thumb" and she said that she would love to be under Mick Jagger's thumb.
E-MAIL: Heather
that just goes to show. but i think that mick jagger is even uglier than steven tyler. man, that guy is terrible looking! but i won't hold it against them. they can't help it, can they? [the narcissistic one has spoken]. what do you think of the Doors?
E-MAIL: john.com
Tyler is uglier & his a much bigger mouth. Mick looked alot better in the 60's - hasn't aged well. The Doors were my favorite group for a period of time in the early 80's. I still like them, but I got a little tired of them after a while. My favorite Doors album is "Soft Parade."
E-MAIL: Heather
at least Steven Tyler dresses up! mick looks like a hobo! what's your favorite Doors song- I'm not familiar with the albums.
E-MAIL: john.com
What's wrong with hobos? I'm a t-shirt & jeans person myself. My favorite Doors song is "The Soft Parade" from the album with the same title. But if you decide to buy a greatest hits album, you won't hear that one.
E-MAIL: Heather
a t-shirt and jeans hobo? c'mon. there is no such thing. well, maybe the new york hobos. i don't know. well, i never have heard "the soft parade", surprise. but off the greatest hits album, my favorite is "break on through" "strange days" "love her madly" and "roadhouse blues". mmm, mmm, mmm. Jim was a good-looking man. oh yes!
E-MAIL: john.com
Me would never have thunkith that "Strange Days" was a hit. Then again, I don't buy greatest hits albums. My favorite Doors hit is "Touch Me" - the hit single from "Soft Parade." I like the choppy rhythm, the strings & horns, and the sax solo at the end. It's a fun song. I also love "Light My Fire" because of the long instrumental passage. I prefer Grace Slick myself (lookswise).
E-MAIL: Flower Child
I have a new name, John. "Heather" was just too boring...Xena and Rainbow helped me to pick this one. "touch me" is okay...but i'm not a big fan of the brass bravado. it puts me on edge when i'm driving, and then i'm most more likely to mow down "innocent" tourists. heh heh.
E-MAIL: john.com
A flower child mowing down tourists. That's like a republican caring about poor people & the environment.
E-MAIL: Flower Child
well, i haven't mowed any down yet, so i'm still your average flower child. someday, though. they will ask one too many idiot questions. no, not really. i actually love everyone: )
E-MAIL: john.com
There's no such thing as an idiot question.
E-MAIL: Flower Child

E-MAIL: Heather
eighteen? yuck. i can't imagine not having my liscense, now that i have it. even so, i really don't like driving much. i prefer having my friends or my boyfriend driving me around. just lazy, i guess.
E-MAIL: john.com
It's 15 in states that nobody lives in. I heard in North Dakota, it's 14. In heavily populated (heavy traffic) areas like New Jersey, you get a learners permit at 16, and a license at 17.
E-MAIL: Heather
you are so goddamn blunt.

E-MAIL: Heather
when i'm in Switzerland, i always notice that the traffic there is unbelievably bad. everything sooo fast paced and so competitive. is it like that in Sweden too?
E-MAIL: Spiderman
No, that stuff happens in the southern parts of Europe.
E-MAIL: john.com
Unlike Manhattan where traffic is too slow & competitive.
E-MAIL: Spiderman
I wouldn't know if that was an ironic comment or not, John so how is it ?
E-MAIL: john.com
No, it's true: slow & competitive. Standstill traffic jams, honking horns, cars (especially taxis) dangerously switching into lanes when there are small openings. It's hectic. I heard about how fast driving is in Europe, esp. the Audubon in Germany.
E-MAIL: Spiderman
It's called the Autobahn.
E-MAIL: john.com
I heard it's a crazy road.
E-MAIL: Spiderman
It sure is. People can drive as fast as they want to. An old remnant from World War II (The only good thing Hitler ever did, as we say in Europe.)

I searched for the thread "goddamn faggots go to hell" (I ws pissed) and this site was the first one returned. I figured it was A) because all Beatles fans are goddamned faggots and deserve to go to hell, or B) because someone (rightfully) attacked the Beatles' shitty music/shitty lyrics/homoerotic themes and the faggot Beatles fans on this site returned fire with the phrase "goddamn faggots, go to hell," which they used because they hear it a lot. (Surprise, surprise.) Anyways, I just wanted to drop a line and say that if you like the beatles, then you like eight fists in your ass while you watch your mother/sister/wife/girlfriend/daughter/transvestite-mistress get chain-raped in the ass by dozens of black dudes. Peace out, faggots.

The Beatles` sixth album, remixed for CD by George Martin.Rubber Soul was recorded at a time when the Beatles weretiring of touring and live performances, and were movingmore toward studio-only work. George Harrison brings a newinstrument to the fore in Norwegian Wood, the sitar, whichwould find its way into many of George`s songs onsubsequent albums. Many of the tracks demonstrate theinfluence of Country and Western styles on the Beatles.A must-have for any serious collector of classic rock/popmusic.

I had fun reading through the comments. Rubber Soul, along with Abbey Road and Revolver, are the best albums from the best group. I enjoyed the American version more than many did, because "i've Just Seen a Face" and "It's Only Love" both fit that acoustic rock format better than Nowhere Man and Drive My Car. (also great songs though) In addition, the American Version did not have "What Goes On" which was the usual kind effort of John, Paul & George to include Ringo in the mix.

Lennon's comments regarding Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Obla-Di have always made me laugh (not sarcastically) He had a very funny way of putting things that irritated him. I like Maxwell and I tolerate Obla di, but I understand that this friction between John and Paul's styles is what helped create the greatness. Paul's "hitmaker" style kept the Beatles on page one, and John's artistic expressiveness kept them "legit". That's a bit simplistic, since John was responsible for slightly over 50% of their early hits, and Paul had the ability to be artistic, as well.

1. Beatles break out of the shell here, but Help! definitely was a prelude to some of the groundbreaking sounds on this album. 2. Drive My Car = Light My Fire. Think about it, the two are identical. I could splice one over the other and you'd get a near perfect vocal harmony. Oh, and in case you were wondering, Drive My Car is 1965, Fire is 1967. 3. Yes, Abbey Road is unbeatable. Too bad few musicians of this era have the balls to create something even close to this fantastic crescendo into a full-blown medley. Reminds me of a Beethoven symphony, Ne ce fait pas?

Actually the beatles were better than the crap those others listen to. If you don't like them, then stay off this board.
