Comments for The Smiths, Meat is Murder

In my opinion the best album of the 80`s. Listen to these songs in bed at night, and you`ll probably never sleep again. All the songs are just brilliant. "How soon is now", need I say more?

Yeah, the Smiths are all well and good, but they're no Marillion. I know of no song greater than the epic "Heart of Lothian." I get shivers just thinking about its mighty power and beauty. If we all listened to more Heart of Lothian, we'd all be much better off. Heart of Lothian--miss at your own expense!

If it's Morrissey/Marr, it is a perfect ten. Nobody writes songs with this much passion anymore. Alterna-crap has displaced the great bands that deserve some respect for once. Come on now- the Smiths integrity is unmatched in today's world of drug addicted, overdone, really pissed off for no good reason, neo-hippy, college bands. Long live the kings, Morrissey and Marr.

This could be such a wonderful LP, if only it didn't end with the somwhat dated and dragging Barbarism begins at Home and the preachy title track. US fans note that How Soon is Now wasn't on the original UK issue, but was a bonus track added by Sire. Well I wonder is one of the saddest songs ever written.

I love this album - appeals to the Anglophile in me. As for the title track - the other day I went out to dinner and was enjoying some delicious prime rib, and I had a mouthful of meat and I swear that line popped into my head - "the meat in your mouth as you savor the flavor of murder". No, it didn't put me off meat but it lessened my enjoyment a bit. As for "Barbarism Begins at Home" - love the bass line! Altogether a thoroughly satisfying album.

Why so many major music publications rate this album as a mediocre effort is beyond me. "Meat Is Murder" may be the album that seperates the men from the boys, so to speak, when it comes to a appreciation of the Smiths. While this one isn't on the level of some of their other work, it's fantastic in it's own right, and many Smiths/Moz fans consider it to be their best. This album should be in anyone's collection, if only for "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore", not only one of The Smiths greatest tracks but one of the most emotional compositions by anyone ever. The US version of this album contains "How Soon Is Now", which at the time of this release was not available domestically.

ALL Smiths albums should be in anyone's collection. nonetheless, I don't regard this as their best album, since the album ends rather weakly. Barbarism is not a very good song, and using 7 minutes for is is preposterous, and Meat Is Murder is way over the top with the animals' noises, and as well too long. The rest of the album is classic, though. Plus, my favorite lyric ever :"And when I'm lying in my bed/I think about life and I thinnk about death/And neither one particularly appeals to me." Brilliant.

Best album I''ve heard. Rating sucks, more of the same would be a great pleasure. If I could buy the CD by this cite I would. Keep up the good work, dispite the breakup. Thumbs-up.
How can meat be murder?
